Film Synopsis

Dickens’ most famous Christmas story returns to the big screen, with Johnny Depp stepping into the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in a wonderfully atmospheric new reimagining of A Christmas Carol.

Set amid the wintry streets of Victorian London, Ebenezer follows the miserly Scrooge on the most extraordinary night of his life. Confronted by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future, he is forced to face the choices that have shaped his life and given one final chance at redemption.

Johnny Depp leads a wonderful British cast, with Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past and Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present. Daisy Ridley and Sam Claflin also star.

This isn’t simply another retelling of a story we all know. Director Ti West brings out the darker, ghostly side of Dickens’ classic while retaining its humour, humanity and enduring story of second chances. The film’s perfectly teasing tagline says it all:

“The name you know, the story you don’t.”
